This consolidation of Nick Cave and Co.'s first two releases as The Birthday Party, the Hee-Haw EP and The Birthday Party LP, is a masterpiece of macabre, chilling dirges, with haunting vocals, and the songwriting- the notes- are sheer genius. The burning, profoundly eerie guitar openings and frantic, howled pleas haunt me in my sleep and play over and over again in my head. And I love it. This album displays less of the grimy, blues-rockabilly influence that came to characterize The Birthday Party's later releases, and it also lacks the thrashing feedback. Instead, they utilize tight, anxious guitar riffs and distinctly Arabian-influenced horn solos. It sounds much cleaner and more solemn; to me, it sounds as if they were focusing more on music-writing and instrumentation, and I see this as a good thing. This is, in my opinion, the best of all their releases. If it does not chill you and immerse you in its ubiquitous Edward Gorey-like eerieness, check your pulse. If you... Read more

This Danish band formed in October 2001 by Michael Poulsen. Their musical style can be described as a combination of Hard Hitting Metallic Rock'n'roll with a touch of the sixties melodic tunes and Elvis. Their debut album "The Strength/The Sound/The Songs" from October 2005 put the band on the map immediately with rave reviews almost everywhere. Their live performances (Roskilde Festival, Rock Hard Festival etc. as well as the many club shows) built the band a loyal and constantly growing army of followers. This album is again produced by Jacob Hansen and has 11original songs all in the signature Volbeat sound. Very metal, very hard rocking and full of power and energy. They have succeeded in transforming the magic they have on stage onto a record. Volbeat are on the verge of their breakthrough in the metal scene and "Rock the Rebel/Metal the Devil" is all what people are expecting it to be.

This may well be how future historians will one day write about Volbeat's stompin' & rockin' sound. Take some old-school (and that's a compliment) Metallica/Megadeth riffs, throw in some very tight drumming indeed, and pour over liberal amounts of Poulsen's vocal metal-jodel artistry - and voila!
This, their second album, is a bit more polished than the first. While die-hard fans of any band will often see this as "selling out", I think that in this case it is more a question of Volbeat being a band that is so playful & experimental, eager to try whatever they think will sound good -- that it simply will not work to put them in a narrowly defined box.
Take some of the songs on this album: Much has been written about 'Sad Man's Tongue' already, but that doesn't change the fact that if you don't start (at the very least)stomping you foot when you hear it, you seriously need to have your ears examined. The shift in energy is one of the best I have every heard... Read more

Volbeat's Rock the Rebel/Metal the Devil is the most fun and original metal I've heard in a very long time. I love this cd. Not a single filler track on the entire thing! Buy it. You won't be sorry. I also purchased their last cd The Strength/The Sound/ The Songs and it too is very good. It's a little more raw and heavy than this cd, but a great find none the less. Check it out if you can.

Get down on your hands and knees and pray to the Gods of Metal, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash and hair pomade. Welcome to the world of Volbeat . Their latest release "Rock the Rebel/Metal the Devil" is one of those cds that has you feeling baptized by a new sound. As the best thing to come out of Denmark since Hamlet, Volbeat formed in 2001 yet their echo is far more mature on this release than their "age" would have you thinking.
Topping the Danish album charts as the first metal album/ best- selling album, Volbeat `s "Rock the Rebel/Metal the Devil " somehow manages to combine Rockabilly and Metal in such a way that you wonder why it hasn't been done all along. While the band is as tight as they come, lead singer, Michael Poulsen, has an atypical and astonishing signature tonal quality to his vocals that is a faultless and impeccable instrument for well crafted lyrics and the banjo meets Beelzebub sound that flows through the entire cd. Jon Larsen - Drums, Anders Kjlholm... Read more

I dont know if this band can do anything wrong right now. VOLBEAT is probably the best live band out there now and will dominate the Gigantour 2012. If you like VOLBEAT you will love this release, they are perfect. It's sad to hear that they parted with guitarist Thomas, he was a fun guy to watch perform and in person.
